How to Keep Mice and Rats Out of Your House for Good

To keep mice and rats out for good, seal every gap they could enter through, remove the food and shelter that attract them, and keep vegetation and clutter away from the house. Prevention, especially sealing entry points, is cheaper and easier than fighting an infestation after it starts.

The most effective rodent control is the kind you never have to think about, because the rodents never get in. Once rats or mice establish themselves, removal and cleanup take real effort. Prevention takes far less, and it lasts. Here is how to keep mice and rats out of your house for good.

Seal the entry points

This is the foundation of everything. Rodents cannot infest a home they cannot enter. A mouse fits through a quarter-inch gap and a rat through a half inch, so walk your home inside and out and seal:

• Gaps around pipes, cables, and utility lines
• Damaged or missing vent screens
• Roofline, eave, and fascia gaps
• Worn seals under exterior and garage doors
• Foundation cracks and openings

Use rodent-resistant materials, steel wool or copper mesh, hardware cloth, and sealant, because rodents chew through foam and plastic. A thorough seal is the single highest-value thing you can do, and it is the heart of rodent proofing.

Remove the food supply

Rodents go where there is food. Make your home a poor restaurant:

• Store pantry goods, pet food, and bird seed in sealed metal or glass containers
• Clean up crumbs and spills, and do not leave pet food out overnight
• Take out trash regularly and keep bins closed
• Pick up fallen fruit from trees, a major roof rat magnet in Southern California

Take away the shelter and the highways

Rodents want cover and easy routes to the house. Deny them both:

• Trim tree branches back several feet from the roof so roof rats cannot climb across
• Cut back ivy, dense shrubs, and vines against walls and fences
• Keep firewood, lumber, and clutter off the ground and away from the foundation
• Clear debris from the yard and along fence lines

Keep up with maintenance

Rodent-proofing is not entirely set-and-forget. Seals wear, screens tear, and roof work can open new gaps. Do a walk-around twice a year, and again after storms or roof repairs, to catch new openings before rodents find them. Catching a torn vent screen in spring is a lot easier than clearing an attic infestation in winter.

If rodents are already inside, prevention alone will not remove them, you need to combine removal with sealing.
